United States and Paraguay announce AI data center powered by Itaipu

The United States government has announced a partnership to establish a high-performance artificial intelligence data center in Paraguay. The project is a collaboration between the American infrastructure company Crusoe and the Paraguayan developer Araico.

The facility is designed to provide high-capacity digital data processing and cloud computing services for clients in both the United States and Latin America. To sustain the continuous operation of the servers, the center will be powered by electricity from the Itaipu hydroelectric dam, which is jointly administered by Paraguay and Brazil.

The first phase of the installation is expected to begin operations by mid-2027. The announcement was made during diplomatic meetings in Asunción involving U.S. Department of State official Christopher Landau and Paraguayan President Santiago Peña.
