United States announces $5.3 billion investment in rail infrastructure
The United States has announced a $5.3 billion federal investment aimed at modernizing national rail infrastructure and improving passenger safety across 23 states. A significant portion of this funding, approximately $3 billion, is designated for Amtrak to support various modernization projects. These initiatives include the procurement of 43 new American-made train sets for routes such as the Adirondack, Cascades, Hiawatha, Keystone, and Wolverine, as well as the expansion of a maintenance facility in Chicago and the modernization of 41 Siemens Charger locomotives.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced that the investment includes approximately $2 billion diverted from the California high-speed rail project. This decision follows the cessation of federal support for the California initiative, which officials noted has faced significant budget increases and delays. The redirected funds will instead be used by the Federal Railroad Administration to bolster national rail safety and upgrade existing passenger services.
