US Treasury threatens global shutdown of Iranian airlines from September 23
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has announced that all Iranian commercial airlines will effectively be shut down from international operations starting September 23. This move is part of ‘Operation Economic Pariah’, a campaign aimed at financially isolating Tehran.
The sanctions target not only the airlines themselves but also foreign service providers. Bessent warned that any entity providing fuel, landing services, or ticket sales to Iranian carriers risks being excluded from the US dollar-based financial system. This follows a September 8 decision by the US Treasury to sanction 36 entities, including 27 Iranian airlines, accused of facilitating the transport of weapons, personnel, and illicit cargo for the Iranian regime.
Several countries have already begun implementing restrictions. Georgia has barred Iranian carriers from its airspace, and Mahan Air has suspended services to Turkey and Oman. Iraq is also expected to suspend flights to comply with US Treasury decisions. Bessent noted that US officials are engaged in discussions with Chinese financial authorities, including the governor of the People's Bank of China, regarding compliance with these measures.
