US approves $2.68 billion air defense sale to Ukraine
The US State Department has approved a potential military sale to Ukraine valued at approximately $2.68 billion, aimed at modernizing the country's air defense capabilities. The package includes S-300 clone missiles, GAM-67 missiles, laser-guided rocket systems, mobile launcher modification kits, and RPS-202 counter-drone radars, along with related logistics and maintenance services.
If finalized, the procurement will be funded through a combination of European contributions and US Foreign Military Financing (FMF) allocated during the previous administration. The FMF funds will be treated as a US capital contribution to the Ukraine Reconstruction Investment Fund via a 1:1 reimbursement mechanism established through a prior minerals agreement.
The proposed sale is currently subject to review and final approval by the US Congress. The State Department noted that the transfer is intended to support US foreign policy and national security objectives by enhancing a partner nation's security without altering the fundamental military balance in the region or requiring additional US personnel in Ukraine.
This announcement coincides with President Donald Trump signing a new sanctions bill against Russia. The air defense upgrades come as Ukraine faces ongoing aerial attacks on its critical infrastructure.
