United States approves $414 million for Niger uranium project
The United States International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) has approved a debt facility of up to $414.2 million for the Dasa uranium project in Niger. The project is being developed by Global Atomic, a Canadian mining company.
While the financing is conditional, the approval represents a significant step for the Dasa project, which is described as having some of the highest-grade uranium deposits in Africa. To secure the funding, several requirements must be met, including establishing export routes from the landlocked nation, extending mining agreements and permits, and reaching formal agreements with the Nigerien government.
The move comes as uranium is classified as a critical mineral in the United States. The investment follows the withdrawal of U.S. military personnel from Niger two years ago and occurs amidst a shifting geopolitical landscape in the region.
