Qatar to potentially acquire $4.5B in US KC-46A refueling aircraft
The United States government has approved a potential $4.5 billion sale of Boeing KC-46A Pegasus aerial refueling aircraft and related military equipment to Qatar. The proposed package, notified to the U.S. Congress on August 20, includes up to four tankers and eight PW4062 turbofan engines, including four spares.
In addition to the aircraft and engines, the deal encompasses a wide array of defensive and support systems. This includes AN/ALR-69A radar warning receivers, Large Aircraft Infrared Countermeasure (LAIRCM) equipment, missile-warning sensors, secure communication modules, and logistical support services. The primary contractors involved in the transaction are Boeing, Pratt & Whitney, RTX, and Northrop Grumman.
The State Department indicated that the sale is intended to enhance Qatar’s defense capabilities and its ability to operate alongside U.S. and allied forces, thereby reinforcing its strategic role in regional security. Officials stated that the acquisition would not alter the fundamental military balance in the Middle East and that Qatar would have no difficulty integrating the new equipment into its armed forces.
