United States approves Bell helicopter and arms sale to Iraq

The United States has approved a significant foreign military sale to Iraq aimed at modernizing its aerial capabilities. The package, which involves Bell helicopters and related equipment, is valued at up to $800 million according to the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), while other reports indicate a specific component of the deal for Bell 412EPX helicopters and associated gear is valued at approximately $150 million.

The sale includes Bell 412EPX helicopters for troop transport, reconnaissance, and search-and-rescue, as well as Bell 407M helicopters for light attack, training, and utility roles. The package also features advanced weaponry, including GAU-19 12.7 mm machine gun pods and M260 70 mm rocket launchers, alongside sophisticated sensors, communication gear, and logistical support.

This procurement is intended to upgrade Iraq’s existing fleet, which includes Russian Mi-17 models, and bolster the nation’s defense ecosystem and operational versatility in a volatile region.
