United States approves $140 million Black Hawk helicopter sale to Argentina

The United States Department of State has approved a potential $140 million Foreign Military Sale to Argentina for four UH-60L Black Hawk helicopters and related equipment. The deal, involving Sikorsky and General Electric, includes two T700-GE-701D engines, advanced avionics, navigation systems, and specialized tools for maintenance and rescue operations.

This procurement aims to modernize the Argentine Army's rotary-wing fleet, specifically to replace the aging Bell UH-1H/Huey II helicopters. The U.S. government stated the sale will support its foreign policy and national security goals by enhancing the capabilities of a key non-NATO ally in South America, particularly in border security, transnational crime combat, and disaster response.

The authorization comes amid heightened diplomatic tensions between Argentina and the United Kingdom regarding the Malvinas Islands. Argentine Defense Minister Carlos Presti indicated that the helicopters could arrive in Argentina during the first quarter of 2027, following formal administrative procedures.
