Iran delegation faces US visa denials for UN General Assembly
The United States has denied visas to several members of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s delegation, including his communications and media team, ahead of the UN General Assembly in New York. While the US has authorized the main Iranian delegation to attend, the mission faces significant restrictions, including limits on the purchase of luxury goods.
Iranian officials, including Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei, have condemned the decision as an ‘unprecedented hostile move’ and an attempt to ‘conceal the truth’ by restricting media access. Baghaei compared the move to the Cold War-era Iron Curtain, accusing Washington of attempting to silence Iranian perspectives on the international stage.
President Pezeshkian is expected to address the UN General Assembly and hold meetings with various world leaders. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who traveled to New York via Qatar, intends to use the visit to review bilateral relations and defend Iranian national interests. This diplomatic visit occurs amid heightened tensions following US-Israeli military actions against Iran in February.
