United States becomes world's largest oil and gas producer

The United States has become the world's largest producer of oil and gas, reaching record-breaking production levels. U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright attributed this surge to the energy policies of the Donald Trump administration, aimed at strengthening domestic production and reducing costs.

This production milestone occurs amid significant global energy market volatility caused by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Following the onset of conflict in early 2026, maritime traffic through the strategic waterway has remained significantly below normal levels, creating uncertainty regarding energy supplies from the Persian Gulf.

Concurrently, U.S. refineries are experiencing unprecedented profit margins due to fuel shortages. Data indicates that diesel margins have reached nearly $100 per barrel, far exceeding the historical average of $40 to $50. Gasoline margins have also risen to between $55 and $60 per barrel. To capitalize on these margins and address supply gaps, refineries in the Rocky Mountains and Gulf Coast are operating at or near 100% capacity, though increased output has yet to fully bridge the gap between supply and demand.
