United States begins direct talks with Myanmar military authorities

The Trump administration has initiated direct talks with Myanmar's military authorities, marking a significant shift from the previous policy of international isolation following the 2021 military coup. Michael Vance, Assistant Secretary of State for Intelligence and Research, played a key role in establishing contact, participating in high-level discussions in Naypyitaw on September 15 and 16 with Myanmar's President Min Aung Hlaing.

Initial negotiations are focused on shutting down internet fraud centers targeting American citizens and securing the release of American entrepreneur Adam Castilla. However, the talks may pave the way for broader cooperation, including potential US access to Myanmar's rare earth element deposits. This move reflects a broader pivot in US foreign policy toward pragmatic, interest-based relations rather than democracy promotion.

Despite these developments, Min Aung Hlaing remains under US sanctions for human rights violations, including the genocide of the Rohingya people. Furthermore, less than two weeks after Vance's visit, the Myanmar military conducted an airstrike on a crowded market in Rakhine State, resulting in over 50 deaths according to UN human rights officials.
