United States Black Teacher Shortage Highlights Racial Gap

Black educators remain severely underrepresented in U.S. schools. During the 2020‑21 school year, just over 6% of teachers were Black, and Black men accounted for only 1.3% of the teaching workforce, despite Black students comprising about 15% of the student population. By 2022, white teachers made up 71.7% of all educators, while Hispanic teachers were 11.6% and Black teachers 9.4%.

The disparity is evident across all grade levels. Approximately 70% of teachers in pre‑K through secondary schools are white, with the highest concentration in secondary schools where 86.2% of educators identify as white. Conversely, Black teachers represent 18.9% of preschool and kindergarten staff, indicating a stronger presence at the earliest education levels. The ongoing shortage raises concerns about mentorship, representation, and the overall academic success of Black students.
