United States boosts investment and engagement at Colombo Port

The United States is increasing its engagement with Sri Lanka’s maritime sector, highlighted by a $15 million funding package approved to upgrade digital infrastructure at the Colombo Port. This investment aims to modernize the digital systems supporting one of Asia’s busiest transshipment hubs, with goals to enhance cargo tracking, improve logistics efficiency, reduce vessel turnaround times, and strengthen cybersecurity.

In conjunction with this financial commitment, senior American maritime regulators Laura DiBella, Chairman of the Federal Maritime Commission, and Commissioner Robert J. Harvey are visiting Colombo from September 6 to 10. The delegation is scheduled to meet with Sri Lankan government officials and maritime leaders to discuss the port’s role in global shipping.

Colombo Port serves as a critical transshipment point, with over 80 percent of the containers passing through the facility destined for other international locations. The U.S. involvement underscores the strategic importance of Sri Lanka’s position along Indian Ocean shipping lanes and reflects broader efforts to foster stability and infrastructure development within the Indo-Pacific region.
