US Heat Wave Forecast Highlights Growing Public‑Health Risks

The National Weather Service and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have released a national forecast that maps extreme‑heat conditions across the contiguous United States for the next three days. The forecast flags areas where temperatures are likely to break daily records and predicts that more than 60 million Americans could face heat advisories, warnings or watches, a level comparable to the average summer of 2023. Heat‑related emergency room visits and dozens of deaths typically rise during such events, prompting officials to advise residents to monitor “feels‑like” temperatures that incorporate humidity and wind.

Rising summer temperatures also trigger the peak season for the brain‑eating amoeba Naegleria fowleri in warm freshwater. Health experts warn that swimmers who submerge their heads in lakes, rivers or other natural bodies of water are at risk of primary amebic meningoencephalitis, a rare but almost always fatal infection. Recommended precautions include keeping the head above water, using nose clips, avoiding disturbing sediment and staying away from shallow, warm water during prolonged heat spikes.
