United States braces for extreme heat ahead of Independence Day

The National Weather Service warned that millions of people along the U.S. East Coast face an extreme heat wave ahead of the July 4 celebrations. Temperatures are expected to reach about 38 °C (100 °F) with heat‑index values climbing to 48 °C (118 °F) in cities such as Washington, Philadelphia and New York.

Mayor Eric Adams urged New Yorkers to stay indoors and use air‑conditioning, while police said only essential staff would be on duty for Independence Day events. President Donald Trump said he would still address the public outdoors despite the heat. The same heat dome that is trapping hot air over the central and eastern U.S. is also pushing temperatures toward 35 °C in Ontario and triggering warnings in Quebec, including Montreal and Quebec City. The heat coincides with major public festivities, including the 250th anniversary of the United States and outdoor World Cup matches.
