United States cancels Ssangyong amphibious drills with South Korea FAST-MOVING
The United States has cancelled the Ssangyong amphibious exercises scheduled for next month with South Korea. The South Korean Marine Corps stated that Washington cited constraints on the availability of U.S. forces due to the ongoing war in Iran.
This cancellation follows a recent decision by President Donald Trump to scale back the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises, reducing them from 11 days to five. Trump attributed this reduction to high costs and the desire to maintain relations with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, suggesting that previous drills sent an inappropriate and hostile signal to Pyongyang.
In response to recent military activities, North Korea launched 10 short-range ballistic missiles last week and issued statements denouncing the joint exercises. While Trump has estimated North Korea's nuclear arsenal at 57 warheads, South Korean officials estimate the country possesses between 80 and 120 nuclear weapons. The allies are currently in consultations regarding the resumption of the Ssangyong drills.
