The United States has cancelled the Ssangyong amphibious landing exercises scheduled for September, according to the South Korean Marine Corps. The cancellation is attributed to constraints on U.S. force availability resulting from the ongoing war in Iran.

This decision follows a recent order by President Donald Trump to reduce the duration of the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield drills from 11 days to five. Trump stated that the exercises sent an “inappropriate and hostile” signal to North Korea and cited high costs and Seoul’s refusal to assist in the conflict against Iran as contributing factors.

While the U.S. and South Korea continue to consult on resuming the Ssangyong drills, the recent shifts in military cooperation have drawn attention to the stability of the alliance. Amidst these changes, North Korea launched approximately 10 short-range ballistic missiles into the Sea of Japan and issued statements denouncing the joint military activities.

Discrepancies remain regarding North Korea's nuclear capabilities; President Trump estimated the country possesses 57 nuclear weapons, while South Korean officials estimate the number is between 80 and 120.
