United States-Caribbean Dialogue addresses regional priorities and infrastructure

The United States-Caribbean Dialogue held in Washington on October 15, 2026, highlighted ongoing questions regarding power dynamics and influence within the U.S.-Caribbean partnership. While the meeting aimed to strengthen ties, reports suggest Caribbean leaders were not consulted in advance to shape the agenda, priorities, or underlying assumptions of the dialogue.

During the discussions, Washington announced US$175.8 million for secure undersea cable infrastructure across the Caribbean and Central America. Other initiatives discussed include regional security and healthcare, with an investment summit scheduled for early 2027. Critics note that for these commitments to provide genuine public benefit, Caribbean governments must have a direct role in defining priorities regarding trade, migration, and infrastructure before formal commitments are established.
