United States celebrates 250th Independence Day in Ankara

The United States celebrated its 250th Independence Day with a reception held at the U.S. Ambassador's residence in Ankara. The event included various foreign mission representatives, diplomats, U.S. Representative Darrell Issa, and Turkish Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek.

During the ceremony, which began with a flag ceremony and the playing of both national anthems, U.S. Ambassador and Special Representative for Syria and Iraq, Tom Barrack, delivered a speech. Barrack highlighted his own Lebanese-Turkish heritage, noting that his grandparents identified as Turkish when they immigrated to the U.S. He remarked that American freedom allowed someone of his background to serve as the U.S. Ambassador in Ankara.

Barrack also addressed the current global climate, noting the chaos in the world and acknowledging Turkey's ability to manage and adapt within its challenging geographic region. He referenced Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's role in shaping modern Turkish identity and expressed hope for cooperation between the U.S., Turkey, and their neighbors.
