United States cost of living projections for 2026

Economic projections for 2026 indicate that achieving the ‘American Dream’—defined as owning a home, raising two children, and securing a debt-free retirement—will require an estimated total of USD 5.3 million. This represents a 4.1% annual increase, outpacing the private sector's average wage growth of 3.1%.

Key expenses in this model include USD 1.28 million for housing and maintenance, USD 1.2 million for two vehicles, and USD 1.2 million for a 20-year retirement for a couple. The cost of raising two children up to age 17 is estimated at USD 707,343, driven largely by childcare costs exceeding USD 13,000 annually per child.

These rising costs coincide with ongoing public pressure regarding inflation. Despite low unemployment and solid economic growth, many Americans report financial strain. A CBS News survey found that nine out of ten Americans consider prices the most important factor in evaluating the economy. Additionally, a study by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York estimated that government tariffs contributed approximately 2.9 percentage points to inflation through February 2026.
