United States crime rates see record decline in 2025
New FBI data reveals a significant decline in violent crime across the United States in 2025. The violent crime rate saw a 9.7 per cent drop, marking the largest annual decline since national estimates began in 1936. Specifically, the murder and non-negligent manslaughter rate fell by 18.5 per cent, reaching a rate of 4.1 per 100,000 people, which matches the joint-lowest levels recorded in 1955 and 1956.
Other crime categories also saw reductions: robberies decreased by 18.5 per cent, rape fell by 7.6 per cent, and aggravated assaults dropped by 7.2 per cent. Property crime declined by an estimated 12.4 per cent, with motor vehicle theft seeing a 22.7 per cent decrease.
Regarding hate crimes, the FBI reported 2,703 single-bias religious hate crime offences in 2025. Anti-Jewish bias represented the largest share at 62.3 per cent, followed by anti-Muslim bias at 9.6 per cent and anti-Sikh bias at 7 per cent (approximately 189 cases). Anti-Hindu bias accounted for 1.2 per cent of religious hate crimes, totaling about 32 offences. Additionally, 7,200 single-bias hate crime offences were motivated by race, ethnicity, or ancestry, with anti-Asian bias accounting for 5.8 per cent of those cases.
