United States crime rates show significant decline
Recent data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Council on Criminal Justice indicate a significant decline in both violent and property crime across the United States between December 2024 and November 2025. Official statistics suggest crime levels have reached their lowest points in decades.
Violent crime rates decreased by 10.0% overall, with notable drops in murder (18.2%), robbery (18.7%), and aggravated assault (8.1%). Property crime fell by 12.1%, driven largely by a 22.8% reduction in motor vehicle theft and a 14.9% decline in burglary.
A report tracking 40 major U.S. cities corroborated these findings, noting that 11 out of 13 offense categories declined. While most crimes saw reductions—including a 43% drop in carjackings and a significant decrease in shoplifting—drug crimes were the only category to see an increase, rising by 7%.
