United States criticizes Israel over planned long-term occupation of southern Lebanon

The United States has criticized Israel following statements by Defense Minister Israel Katz regarding a long-term military presence in southern Lebanon. Katz stated that the Israel Defense Forces are prepared for an indefinite presence in security zones to protect the state, asserting that Israel will not withdraw from these areas.

U.S. State Department officials responded that such positions contradict previous commitments made by the Israeli government. Washington emphasized that Israel had clearly stated it had no territorial ambitions in Lebanon and that a permanent military presence is inconsistent with the framework agreement intended to ensure long-term peace and security for both nations.

The U.S. maintains support for Lebanese territorial integrity and sovereignty. The existing framework provides a conditional path for the progressive redeployment of Israeli forces, which is tied to the verified disarmament of Hezbollah and the dismantling of its infrastructure. Currently, the Lebanese Armed Forces are implementing initial pilot zones as part of this process.
