United States criticizes University of Ghent over researcher suspension

A diplomatic dispute has emerged between the United States and the University of Ghent following the suspension of researcher Nathan Cofnas. The U.S. Embassy in Brussels, led by Ambassador Bill White, has strongly condemned the university’s decision, characterizing it as a retaliatory measure against a whistleblower who reported alleged academic fraud.

White, a figure close to Donald Trump, criticized the institution, suggesting it is attempting to silence Cofnas. The U.S. mission further stated that institutions attempting to suppress whistleblowers are no longer considered reliable partners. In response, the University of Ghent maintained that the suspension of Cofnas is merely a “preventative” measure pending a preliminary disciplinary investigation.

The controversy stems from plagiarism allegations made by Cofnas against Jason Arday, a former Cambridge professor. Arday, who had resigned amid investigations into his academic work, was recently found dead at his home. While some supporters view Arday as a victim of media harassment, the allegations regarding his academic integrity remain a central point of the ongoing conflict.
