United States debates legal challenges of AI marriage

While marriage to artificial intelligence lacks legal validity in the United States, the concept is moving from fiction into social and legislative reality. Individuals forming emotional bonds with chatbots have begun seeking symbolic ceremonies, commitment certificates, and AI-generated rings to formalize these relationships, despite the lack of legal standing.

Legislative bodies are already responding to this trend. According to reports, at least four U.S. states—Idaho, North Dakota, Utah, and Tennessee—have passed measures to prevent AI systems from being granted the same rights as humans in marriage. Since 2022, at least 23 related legislative projects have been introduced across various states. These proposals aim to address emerging legal questions regarding legal personality, property rights, and the limits of recognizing such relationships.

The phenomenon is driven by the rising popularity of virtual partner applications and intense emotional connections users report with general-purpose AI tools. Similar symbolic ceremonies have been documented internationally, including instances involving augmented reality and virtual partners.
