United States decertifies Colombia in annual drug trafficking report

The United States government has decertified Colombia in its annual report regarding major drug transit and production countries for fiscal year 2027. Under the administration of Donald Trump, Colombia was identified alongside Afghanistan and Bolivia as a nation that has “demonstrably failed during the previous 12 months to make substantial efforts to comply with its international obligations” regarding narcotics control.

Amid this decision, Colombia’s Ambassador to the United States, María Consuelo Araújo, presented her credentials to President Trump at the White House. Representing the administration of President Abelardo de la Espriella, Araújo emphasized the importance of bilateral cooperation to ensure security, stability, and prosperity in the hemisphere.

Her diplomatic agenda includes strengthening joint strategies against international organized crime, boosting bilateral trade, and supporting reconstruction efforts in areas affected by recent natural disasters. While the decertification highlights failures in drug control, the ambassador noted that the Colombian executive's priorities are focused on consolidating public order to attract investment and promote regional stability.
