Trump pauses 50% tariffs on Canadian imports amid trade deal talks

President Donald Trump has issued a three-day pause on 50% tariffs scheduled to be imposed on various Canadian imports. The delay, which pushes the effective date from August 19 to August 22, comes as the United States and Canada work to finalize a trade agreement.

The proposed tariffs, enacted under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, target products including alcohol, dairy, cement, hockey sticks, and motor vehicles. The administration cited Canada's discriminatory treatment of American commerce as the justification for the measures. However, the current tariff package excludes energy, potash, certain fish, and critical minerals.

Negotiations in Washington have involved high-level officials, including Canadian negotiator Dominic LeBlanc and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. President Trump indicated that the 50% rate may be reduced following the finalization of the deal. Additionally, Trump suggested that the Keystone XL pipeline could be revived as part of the broader trade settlement.
