Boeing wins $20 billion U.S. Navy contract for F/A-XX fighter

The U.S. Navy has awarded Boeing a contract exceeding $20 billion to develop the F/A-XX, a sixth-generation carrier-based strike fighter. This program, part of the Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) initiative, is designed to eventually replace the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and EA-18G Growler fleets starting in the 2030s. The contract covers the full-scale development phase, including the production of multiple test aircraft for ground, airworthiness, systems, and weapons integration testing.

The F/A-XX is intended to operate alongside the F-35C and will be capable of working with both crewed and uncrewed platforms, such as Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA). Boeing secured the contract after competing against Northrop Grumman. This win follows Boeing's 2025 selection for the U.S. Air Force's F-47 sixth-generation fighter program, positioning the company as a primary developer for both branches' next-generation manned combat aircraft.
