U.S. designates American scholars Min Zin and Youlin Chen as wrongfully detained by China

The United States government has formally designated American citizen Min Zin as wrongfully detained by China. Secretary of State Marco Rubio made the determination following a review of the circumstances surrounding Zin's detention in Yunnan province on June 3, while he was attending an academic conference.

China has accused Zin, the founder of the Institute for Strategy and Policy - Myanmar, of espionage and endangering national security. The U.S. Department of State has called on Beijing to release all American citizens who are being arbitrarily detained or prevented from leaving the country.

This announcement follows the earlier designation of Dr. Youlin Chen, a prominent seismologist, as wrongfully detained. Dr. Chen was arrested in Beijing in late 2024 and has been held for over 650 days. The U.S. government is escalating diplomatic efforts to secure the release of both academics, making their freedom a high priority in ongoing bilateral relations.
