United States denies plans to change Lebanon's political system
The United States Department of State has denied reports of any joint American-Turkish proposal regarding Lebanon. Spokesperson Tammy Pigott clarified on social media that Washington does not support any plan to alter Lebanon's political structure established by the Taif Agreement.
Pigott emphasized that the U.S. remains committed to cooperating with Lebanon and Israel through a trilateral framework aimed at ending the cycle of conflict between the two parties. While welcoming support from international partners, the U.S. did not specify a role for Turkey in this process.
The Taif Agreement, mediated by Saudi Arabia in 1989, serves as the foundation for Lebanon's constitutional institutions and the distribution of power between Muslim and Christian representatives.
