United States denies visa to Ada Colau for Puerto Rico trip
The United States government has denied a visa to Ada Colau, the former mayor of Barcelona and current candidate for Frente Amplio, preventing her from traveling to Puerto Rico. Colau was scheduled to participate in a meeting of the Fearless Cities network regarding municipalism, alongside other international figures.
While official documentation cited concerns that Colau intended to migrate to the United States illegally, her representatives claim the decision is politically motivated. They attribute the veto to her activism with the Global Sumud Flotilla, a humanitarian aid mission to Gaza that was intercepted by Israeli security forces last year, resulting in her three-day detention in Israel.
Colau’s team noted that while the rest of her delegation successfully obtained electronic travel authorizations, her application was the only one rejected. In response, Colau criticized the decision on social media, characterizing it as an ideological move by the Trump administration.
