United States deploys troops and drones to Latin America

The United States is increasing its military presence in Latin America by deploying at least 600 personnel and MQ-9 Reaper drones to the region. This movement is part of the Trump administration's efforts to combat narcotics trafficking and expand American influence, particularly in competition with China.

Military personnel are being sent to Panama, Colombia, and Honduras for training exercises and cooperation with local forces. Initial deployments have already begun at a training center in Panama, with further exercises scheduled to start in Colombia this October. Experts suggest these troops will primarily serve as advisors to local armed forces and police, who will maintain responsibility for direct operations.

Additionally, MQ-9 Reaper drones have been redirected from Africa to Ecuador and Colombia to support anti-narcotics operations against criminal organizations classified as terrorist groups by the U.S. government. These actions fall under the ‘Shield of the Americas’ initiative, a program designed to combat organized crime in the region. Brazil is not a member of this group.
