United States deports Cuban intelligence asset

United States authorities have deported Fernando Armando Valdés Pérez, a 61-year-old Cuban-Guatemalan national identified as an intelligence asset for the Cuban regime. Valdés Pérez was apprehended on July 10 at Miami International Airport during a joint operation involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the FBI, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Authorities allege that Valdés Pérez fraudulently obtained permanent residency by concealing his ties to the Cuban government. Investigations suggest his activities began in the mid-1990s, during which he was tasked with infiltrating Cuban exile and opposition groups in both Latin America and the United States to gather intelligence for Havana.

Valdés Pérez reportedly managed to embed himself within prominent exile circles, including the network of the late Luis Posada Carriles. While his deportation was finalized on August 7, officials have not specified his final destination or confirmed whether formal espionage charges were filed.
