United States deports Haitian family including Brazilian child

The United States government has deported a Haitian family to Haiti, including a Brazilian child born in 2021 and a three-year-old born in the U.S. The deportation occurred on August 27 as part of an intensified crackdown on immigration following the Supreme Court's decision to allow the Trump administration to terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian nationals.

The family, who resided in New York, had previously attempted to seek asylum in Canada after losing their legal protections in July. They were detained and transferred to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody before being placed on a deportation flight.

The removal of TPS affects approximately 330,000 Haitians who previously held legal status to live and work in the U.S. The Department of Homeland Security has indicated plans to expand deportations, aiming to repatriate up to 250 individuals per week. The deportations return families to a Haiti currently facing extreme instability, characterized by gang control over much of Port-au-Prince and widespread food insecurity.
