US designates helium as a critical material

The U.S. Department of Energy has officially designated helium as a critical material, citing its indispensable role in semiconductor manufacturing, energy technologies, and advanced industries such as aerospace and medical imaging.

The decision, announced by Energy Secretary Chris Wright, aims to reduce reliance on foreign sources, strengthen domestic manufacturing, and secure the national economy. Under this designation, helium producers will have access to increased federal financing, and the government will implement closer monitoring of its supply chain.

Global helium supplies face significant disruption risks. While the United States is the world’s largest producer, major supply hubs in the Middle East have been impacted by geopolitical tensions, including the closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran and strikes on Qatari infrastructure. Additionally, Russia has implemented temporary export controls to protect its domestic market. These disruptions have contributed to supply shortages and price volatility, particularly affecting chipmakers and high-tech sectors.
