United States designates Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood as terrorist organization
The United States Department of State has designated the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood as a specially designated global terrorist organization. This classification, which became effective on March 16, 2026, also includes the Sudanese Islamic Movement and the Al-Baraa bin Malik Brigade as components linked to the group.
Washington justified the decision by accusing these entities of participating in the Sudanese war alongside the armed forces. U.S. officials claim the group contributed over 20,000 fighters to the conflict, some of whom reportedly received training and support from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. Additionally, members of the Al-Baraa bin Malik Brigade have been accused of performing mass executions of civilians in areas under their control.
The designation allows for the freezing of assets under U.S. jurisdiction, the restriction of financial transactions, and the prosecution of entities providing material support. The move highlights an increasing use of legal and financial tools to target networks associated with violence, though its effectiveness remains tied to the ability to identify specific funding networks and intermediaries.
