United States donates $6 million in drones to Panama
The United States has donated four K1000 unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) to Panama’s National Aeronaval Service (Senan) to bolster national security and surveillance capabilities. Valued at over $6 million, the aircraft are designed to enhance monitoring in remote, coastal, and difficult-to-access areas, with a specific focus on combating drug trafficking.
The drones feature an operational autonomy of up to 24 hours of continuous flight. According to Senan, the systems will be assigned to their Unmanned Aircraft Squadron to strengthen technological and operational capacities. During the official handover, U.S. Ambassador Kevin Marino Cabrera noted that this donation is a result of expanded cooperation between the two governments, highlighting that U.S. support for Panama has increased significantly this year.
In conjunction with the equipment delivery, nine Panamanian pilots completed a six-week theoretical and practical training program to become the first specialized promotion capable of operating these systems. Public Security Minister Frank Ábrego stated that the technology will complement surface unit patrols and expand surveillance coverage across Panamanian territorial waters.
