United States Emerges as Global LNG Superpower

In 2025 the United States accounted for roughly 93% of the world’s additional liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports, adding about 1.10 trillion cubic feet to global supply. U.S. LNG shipments rose from less than 0.03 trillion cubic feet in 2015 to 5.2 trillion cubic feet in 2025, giving the country a 25.4% share of the global LNG market. Analysts attribute the surge to the shale revolution, which unlocked cheap gas, and to a network of Gulf Coast pipelines, storage facilities and export terminals, many converted from former import sites. Ongoing projects aim to further expand export capacity, positioning U.S. LNG to become the nation’s second‑largest net export within five years. The rapid growth is expected to generate significant jobs, boost GDP and keep domestic gas prices among the world’s lowest, while reshaping global gas trade by reducing reliance on traditional suppliers such as Qatar and Australia.
