United States expands cultural and economic engagement in Nigeria

The United States is expanding its cultural and economic engagement with Nigeria through initiatives focused on intellectual property (IP) and heritage preservation. In Lagos, the US Consulate General hosted a strategic workshop titled ‘IP for Growth in Africa: Lagos Music Industry Workshop’. The event aimed to strengthen IP enforcement and monetization to encourage cross-border investment in Nigeria’s music sector.

US Consul General Brandon Hudspeth noted that robust legal protections are essential for building investor confidence, citing existing partnerships between global entities like Universal Music Group and local labels as successful models. The initiative seeks to unlock revenue for Nigerian creators and facilitate international trade.

In a separate cultural effort, the US Consulate General awarded a $125,000 grant via the US Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation to protect the historic Lejja iron-smelting site in Enugu State. The project, managed by the Centre for Memories, will utilize archaeological conservation and 3D digital documentation to preserve the site and its associated oral histories.
