US lifts sanctions on Iraq's Fly Baghdad airline
The U.S. Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control removed counter‑terrorism sanctions from Iraq’s Fly Baghdad Airlines and two of its Boeing 737 aircraft. The airline had been placed on the Specially Designated Nationals list in January 2024 for alleged support to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Quds Force in Iraq, Syria and Lebanon. An administrative review found major changes in the carrier’s operations, leading to its delisting. U.S. officials emphasized that the action does not signal a shift in U.S. policy toward Iran, the IRGC, or any designated terrorist organization, and warned that sanctions could be reimposed at any time. The airline’s owner, Basheer Abdulkazim Alwan, remains on the sanctions list. The relief coincided with ongoing U.S.–Iran negotiations over the Strait of Hormuz, and markets reacted with Brent crude falling about 5.3 % to $79.36 per barrel.
