United States expands sanctions against Cuban state entities and industries

The United States government has significantly increased economic pressure on Cuba through a new wave of sanctions targeting key industries and organizations. The Treasury and State departments announced penalties against approximately ten state-owned mining, metal, and construction companies, as well as the leadership of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP).

Secretary of State Marco Rubio characterized ICAP as a vehicle for a subversive network operating within the United States to radicalize American citizens. Additionally, U.S. officials have accused the Cuban military conglomerate GAESA of operating without state oversight for years, alleging the group has misappropriated $18 billion in public funds.

The expanded sanctions also target industries previously exempt from such measures, including sectors related to food imports and processing. This escalation occurs amid an ongoing oil blockade and heightened enforcement of laws preventing Americans from engaging in business with Cuban government-affiliated entities.
