United States expands security cooperation and drone deployment in Latin America

The United States is significantly expanding its security and anti-narcotics cooperation in Latin America through new institutional structures and military assets.

In Argentina, Washington has established a regional unit of the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) in Buenos Aires. This move is supported by a $13.35 million fund, with $7.5 million specifically allocated for projects within Argentina and $5.85 million for regional initiatives. This expansion is expected to increase existing cooperation resources tenfold.

In Colombia and Ecuador, the U.S. has deployed MQ-9 Reaper drones, which were transferred from Africa to enhance surveillance and precision strike capabilities against organized crime. Ecuadorian officials confirmed that two Reaper drones are already operational in their airspace.

Additionally, the U.S. administration plans to reallocate over $52 million from Foreign Military Financing to support security efforts in Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, and Panama, aiming to strengthen regional defenses against drug trafficking and organized crime.
