United States explores Belarusian potash deals amid trade tensions with Canada

The United States is exploring a deal to purchase potash from Belarus at lower prices, a move that could impact Canada’s long-standing dominance in the American potash market. President Donald Trump indicated that Washington is seeking a “massive Deal” with Belarus following reports that Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has resumed sales to the U.S. after an easing of sanctions. This development occurs amid ongoing trade tensions between the U.S. and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Industry experts suggest the move may be a negotiation tactic rather than a permanent shift in supply. Josh Linville of StoneX Group noted that Belarus’s maximum arrivals in the U.S. market are approximately 750,000 tons and that logistics remain difficult, as Belarus must currently route product through Russia. Canada currently provides 80% to 90% of U.S. potash imports.

As the U.S. seeks to diversify its supply security, attention is turning toward Atlantic-facing African nations. Gabon’s Banio Potash Project is cited as a potential candidate due to its significant resources and proximity to Atlantic shipping routes. The project is currently undergoing a feasibility study to assess production capacities.
