United States eyes 4 GHz band for 6G development
The United States is considering the 4 GHz frequency band for the deployment of initial 6G networks. According to a report by Ookla, the 4.4–4.94 GHz range is currently utilized by federal agencies, including the military for activities such as flight testing.
There is growing support to relocate some federal users to allow this spectrum to be auctioned for commercial 5G and 6G mobile networks. Major carriers like T-Mobile and Verizon have already planned testing within the 4.8–4.9 GHz range, with Verizon publicly stating its research direction for 6G technology.
The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) has been tasked by the 2025 budget to study this band, with a roadmap for the 4.4 GHz band expected by July 2026 to bolster U.S. leadership in 6G. While the mobile industry aims for auctions by 2030, some cable companies and equipment providers suggest sharing the spectrum with federal users rather than full relocation.
