United States faces AI competition from China and trade tensions with Canada

Simultaneously, trade tensions are escalating between the U.S. and its allies and rivals. Following a cycle of retaliatory measures, the U.S. announced 50% tariffs on $20 billion of Canadian imports, with additional planned tariffs on vehicles, steel, and auto parts set for early 2027. Canada has responded by threatening similar measures and considering cuts to energy and critical mineral exports essential to U.S. manufacturing. These actions raise concerns regarding the stability of existing free trade agreements and create legal uncertainty for North American commerce.
