United States faces potential debt crisis as interest costs rise

Economist Kenneth Rogoff warns that the United States is approaching a debt crisis. While debt levels were previously managed by low interest rates, rising borrowing costs are now significantly impacting the federal budget.

Interest payments have rapidly escalated from a minor expense to the second-largest category in the federal budget, and are projected to become the largest. This increase in interest costs further expands the budget deficit. To address this, the government faces three primary options: increasing taxes, reducing expenditures, or borrowing more. Currently, the U.S. has opted for increased borrowing.

Investors in the bond market are expressing growing concern regarding a potential global oversupply of debt securities. While markets may remain patient if the government demonstrates a commitment to controlling debt, the current strategy of moderate deficit reduction has been applied for many years, leading to increased scrutiny from investors.
