United States faces potential winter storm battleground due to El Niño

Meteorologists are warning that a strengthening El Niño could trigger a severe winter season across the United States, potentially impacting 19 states with heavy snow, ice, and flooding.

Data from the NOAA Climate Prediction Center indicates an 83% chance that a strong-to-very-strong El Niño will persist into early 2027. This phenomenon, driven by warm Pacific Ocean waters, is expected to shift precipitation patterns. A predicted “winter storm battleground” spans from southern Maine down the East Coast to Florida, with potential impacts extending west into Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama.

In the West, California may experience above-average precipitation, leading to heavy mountain snow and increased risks of mudslides and flooding. While some forecasters emphasize the threat of major snow and ice storms in the Appalachian region and the Mid-Atlantic, others suggest that warmer temperatures could result in more significant rainfall and coastal flooding in northern regions.
