United States national debt surpasses $40 trillion
The United States is facing significant fiscal pressure as its national debt has surpassed $40 trillion. This surge in debt is accompanied by rising interest costs, with daily interest payments estimated at approximately $3 billion, totaling roughly $1 trillion annually.
Yields on 30-year Treasury bonds have recently reached levels near 5.3 percent, a high not seen since 2007. To manage these rising long-term rates, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has announced plans to purchase long-term debt in secondary markets, funded by the issuance of lower-cost short-term debt.
Global creditors remain heavily involved in US debt. Japan is the largest holder, with $1.1 trillion in Treasury bonds, followed by the United Kingdom and China. The Congressional Budget Office estimates the current fiscal year's budget deficit will reach $2.1 trillion. Economic indicators such as US inflation and the debt-to-GDP ratio—projected by the IMF to reach 142 percent by 2031—continue to influence market volatility and investor behavior.
