United States faces rising debt interest and healthcare costs
The United States is facing significant economic pressures due to rising debt interest and healthcare costs. US Treasury data shows that net interest payments reached a historic high of $1.05 trillion for the fiscal year ending in September, an increase of over 8% from the previous year. The Peter G. Peterson Foundation estimates these costs will reach 3.2% of the GDP, surpassing the previous record set in 1991. This surge is driven by a total debt exceeding $32 trillion and significantly higher interest rates, with the average rate for marketable treasuries rising to 3.52% from 1.47% five years ago.
Simultaneously, the cost of hospital stays in the US is increasing, placing a heavy burden on households. An analysis by LendingTree indicates that the average cost of a hospital stay is approximately $16,353, with an estimated daily cost of $3,297. The average stay lasts nearly five days. These rising healthcare expenses are outpacing wage growth, requiring more labor hours to cover medical bills, which creates further financial instability for individuals, particularly those with limited insurance coverage.
