United States faces surge in potent synthetic drug crisis

A surge in synthetic drugs is intensifying the drug crisis across the United States, with significant impacts reported in urban areas such as Chicago’s South Side and Columbus, Ohio. These substances, including fentanyl, are often chemically engineered and can be manufactured in residential settings like basements or bathtubs.

Fentanyl is noted to be 50 to 100 times more potent than heroin. The drug supply has evolved to include cocktails of synthetic opioids mixed with animal tranquilizers, a combination that complicates efforts to revive overdose victims. While U.S. overdose deaths peaked at 110,000 in 2022, recent figures indicate a decline to approximately 70,000 last year.

Local communities and organizations, including churches, are working on the frontlines to address the crisis through outreach, support services, and the use of Naloxone to reverse overdoses.
