The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) added advanced foreign humanoid and quadruped robots to its Covered List, prohibiting their import and commercial sale in the United States. The agency said the ban targets robots produced in China because of national‑security and cyber‑risk concerns, citing back‑door vulnerabilities that could allow data exfiltration to Chinese servers. An exemption applies to robots already approved for use by the U.S. Department of Defense.

China’s embassy in Washington protested the measure, saying it would harm Chinese firms and urging cooperation on AI development. The ban is part of a broader U.S. effort to secure critical technology sectors, following earlier restrictions on semiconductors, 5G, AI and energy components.

Indian robotics startup Ati Robotics sees the decision as a market opportunity. Founder Saurabh Chandra says the company’s industrial robots use minimal Chinese components and plans to launch its first humanoid robot for material handling, produced in Bangalore, by the end of the year.
